Tips for Success when Renting with Pets

The best way to ensure harmony as renter with pets is to be a good neighbor!

Mostly its a matter of extending your consideration as a good neighbor to also include your pet with such basics as:

  • Manners. A well trained dog can be a welcome addition to a pet friendly community.
  • Cleanliness. If you have outdoor cats, be aware that neighbors may have concerns. And of course anything left behind by your dog should be cleaned up immediately.
  • Noise. Reduce barking by providing treats & toys to occupy your dog when you are gone, and by ensuring that your dog is getting plenty of exercise - long walks and play time are wonderful for both you and your pet.
  • Ordinances. Be aware of local laws such as leash-laws or poop-scoop ordinances.
  • Be neighborly. By getting to know your neighbors, they will hopefully be comfortable coming to you rather than going directly to your landlord with any concerns they may have. Plus you now have contacts if you ever need someone to let your pet out or feed it when you are in a pinch.
